Introduction
For a German work application that relies on your U.S. degree, you may need evidence of its comparability to a German qualification. Start with Anabin: it can provide the evidence without a separate assessment when the relevant university and degree entries are suitable.
If Anabin does not provide suitable evidence, ZAB offers an individual Statement of Comparability. Below, we explain the two database checks, how to prepare a ZAB application, and the published fee and processing times.
Start with the route you intend to use. Not every German residence permit requires the same qualification evidence. This guide is for people who need to establish the comparability of a completed foreign university degree for an employment application.
Do you need Anabin or a ZAB assessment?
Anabin is the official database maintained by Germany's Central Office for Foreign Education, known as ZAB. It contains information about institutions and qualifications. A ZAB Statement of Comparability is an individual assessment of a particular completed degree.
Neither is a replacement for professional permission in a regulated occupation. Nor does a positive degree assessment mean that a visa, university place, or job is guaranteed. ZAB explains the scope of its document on the Statement of Comparability page.
If your goal is a work visa or EU Blue Card, establish which qualification the route relies on. Someone applying with a bachelor's degree and someone using a later master's degree may need different records. A résumé listing both is not the evidence itself.
How to check your university and degree in Anabin
The official academic degree evaluation guidance explains the usual combination: the institution should have a positive status, and the degree should have a positive comparability assessment.
Check both entries before marking this part of your application complete:
Find the awarding institution. Use the country and the institution's name as shown on your records. An institution marked H+ is generally recognized as a higher education institution. Read the full entry, including any qualifications or comments.
Find the relevant degree. Check the award and its assessment. The German terms entspricht and gleichwertig indicate the positive comparisons relevant here.
Check that the entries fit together. The award, institution, and any conditions in the entry need to match your circumstances. An H+/- institution entry needs particular attention; it is not a simple universal yes.
Save the complete evidence. Keep the relevant institution and degree information, including the assessment and explanatory notes. A cropped image showing only “H+” leaves the degree question unanswered.
Anabin's current research instructions describe the searches under Institutionen and Hochschulabschlüsse. The interface is in German. Search for the country in which the qualification was awarded, rather than choosing Germany because that is where you plan to move.

What if your degree is not listed?
A missing search result is not the same as a finding that the degree is unacceptable. First check spelling, abbreviations, former institution names, and the wording of the award. A department's name may differ from the university that legally awarded the degree.
Read the assessment and notes attached to the result you find. An entry for a similar qualification is useful for orientation, but it may not establish comparability for your own award.
An individual ZAB assessment is often the practical next step when the database does not provide suitable evidence. Follow ZAB's Pre-Check rather than ordering documents based on another applicant's experience. The relevant country, degree, and application purpose matter. For an institution rated H+/-, the official degree-evaluation guidance requires the degree to be listed under that institution; do not treat H+/- as an unconditional positive result.
Worked example: your university is rated H+, but you cannot find suitable evidence for the degree itself. Save the institution result, then work through ZAB's Pre-Check to establish the next step. Tell your prospective employer that the degree evidence is still pending when discussing a start date.
How to apply for a ZAB Statement of Comparability
ZAB's application instructions start with a Pre-Check that produces a document list. Applications are submitted online through a ZAB account using BundID.
Work through the Pre-Check list one record at a time. Locate your degree certificate and academic records, request missing documents from the university, and identify any required translations. Where a translation is required, include the underlying original-language document too.
For a U.S. graduate, useful preparation includes locating the final award document, checking access to academic records, and resolving any difference between the name on the degree and the name on the passport. The Pre-Check determines the actual required submission. Do not assume that every document needs an apostille or that every English-language record needs a German translation.
ZAB currently lists the assessment fee as €208. Check the current fee and payment instructions when you apply. Keep the payment confirmation with the application correspondence so a missing payment does not become an invisible delay.
How long does a ZAB assessment take?
ZAB states a standard processing period of three months once the required documents are complete and payment has been received. Time spent obtaining missing records sits outside that expectation.
There is a separate EU Blue Card processing procedure. ZAB gives a two-week processing target when its conditions are met, including a complete, paid application and the required evidence of the intended employment, such as a signed contract or employer letter of intent. Select the correct purpose and follow the current instructions.
That is a ZAB assessment target, not a promise that a Blue Card or entry visa will be issued within two weeks. The employer's documents, immigration application, and authority's decision remain separate stages.
What should you check before submitting your degree evidence?
Sending the institution result alone. Put the degree evidence beside it. If the second part is unresolved, label it as pending in your own planning rather than marking recognition complete.
Treating U.S. accreditation as the German answer. Accreditation can explain the institution's standing at home, but the German application still needs the evidence required by the relevant route.
Ordering every possible certification before checking the list. Extra stamps do not compensate for the wrong document. Confirm the required record and format before spending money on certification, translation, or delivery.
Before submission, put the relevant Anabin printouts or ZAB statement beside your degree certificate and identity records. Confirm that the awarding institution, qualification, and name differences are explained by the documents you provide.
Keep qualification paperwork on your relocation timeline
A qualification assessment can sit on the critical path to an employment application. If you are waiting for academic records or a ZAB statement, that work needs to stay visible alongside housing, travel, and the rest of your household's preparation.
EuroHaven brings relevant document preparation and its dependent tasks into your personalized plan. Track the dates and readiness of your paperwork, then use the dashboard to see where to focus next. Having a certificate and having it prepared for a particular task are tracked separately, so an unfinished preparation step stays visible.
