You do not necessarily need a permanent lease to register your address in Germany. A furnished apartment, sublet, or other temporary home can be usable for Anmeldung. What matters is that you actually live there, how the stay is treated under registration law, and whether the housing provider supplies the required confirmation.
The booking platform’s name does not settle it. Before paying for your first accommodation, get a clear answer about the address and the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, the housing-provider confirmation.
Which kinds of accommodation can work?
Accommodation | What to establish before booking |
Furnished temporary apartment | Whether it will be your actual home and who will issue the confirmation for everyone moving in |
Airbnb or another short-let platform | Whether this specific host can provide the confirmation for your actual stay; the platform receipt is insufficient |
Sublet | Whether the arrangement is authorized and which person is acting as your housing provider |
Staying with family or friends | Whether you are genuinely moving in and who will confirm that move |
Hotel or serviced accommodation | Which registration rules apply to the stay and whether ordinary municipal registration is needed or possible in your circumstances |
The Federal Registration Act defines a dwelling broadly. Paying rent is not the decisive test. Registering at a friend’s address while actually living somewhere else is a different matter: an address offered without an actual or intended move-in is prohibited under Section 19.
What the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung needs to say
The housing provider confirms your actual move-in. Under Section 19, the confirmation includes the provider’s name and address, the owner’s name if different, the move-in date, the dwelling’s address, and the names of the people who must register.
Ask for every relocating household member to be included, rather than only the person who booked the accommodation. Check that the address and names match the other application documents.
A lease, invoice, or booking email does not replace this form. Berlin’s registration checklist explicitly makes that distinction. In a sublet, identify the actual housing provider rather than assuming the property owner will handle it directly.

Does everyone have to register within two weeks?
The ordinary rule in Section 17 is registration within two weeks after moving into a dwelling. It is tied to moving in, rather than simply stepping off the plane.
There are exceptions for temporary stays. Section 27 includes a temporary stay of up to six months for someone already registered in Germany, and rules for people who otherwise live abroad and are not registered in Germany. Berlin describes the latter exception as a stay of no more than three months.
Those exceptions do not create a general three-month postponement for everyone relocating from the United States. Someone making a new home in Germany should not assume that a short booking makes them a visitor. If your case is unclear, give the registration office the actual facts: where you ordinarily live, whether you are relocating permanently, the type of accommodation, and your expected stay.
Hotels have additional rules
Commercial accommodation is addressed separately in Section 29. Among other provisions, it requires municipal registration after three months for people who are not registered for a dwelling in Germany, within the following two weeks. For people already registered for a dwelling in Germany, a hotel stay of more than six months triggers the ordinary registration rules.
The special guest registration required of foreign guests at reception is separate from address registration at the Bürgeramt. A hotel can use one of the legally permitted electronic procedures instead of a handwritten guest form. Do not assume reception has completed your Anmeldung because it has checked your passport.
For a relocation stay, ask the local registration office how your hotel arrangement should be handled before relying on it as your registered address. A hotel reservation may establish where you intend to stay for one application while still leaving the Anmeldung question unresolved.

A message to send before you book
“We are relocating to Germany and would live at this property from [date] to [date]. Can you provide a signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung after move-in for [household members]? Please confirm who issues it and whether there are any restrictions relevant to address registration.”
Keep the reply. If the listing says “Anmeldung not possible,” do not build the rest of your move around an assumption that the host will change their mind. Clarify the reason before committing to the booking.
Where you have actually moved in and registration is required, the provider has a duty to cooperate. Section 19 says you must promptly inform the registration authority if the confirmation is refused or not supplied in time. Contact the office with your move-in details and correspondence; do not manufacture a replacement form or use an unrelated address.
What happens when you move again?
Anmeldung records where you live. It does not approve your immigration status or grant permission to work. Keep the residence application on its own timeline, especially if you are an American applying after entry. Our residence-permit guide explains that route.
When you move from the temporary place to your longer-term home, update your registration under the applicable rules and tell offices handling pending applications about the new address. Make arrangements to receive mail during the transition. A letter sent to last month’s accommodation can be easy to miss.
For the appointment itself, see our complete Anmeldung guide. For the surrounding tasks, use the first thirty days checklist.
